Garden Room
This light-filled 410 sq ft room has a king bed, window-side writing desk and glazed doors leading to a balcony overlooking the walled garden.
Peonies and climbing roses flower in the Great Glasshouse until early summer.
A casino salon within a garden estate hotel
Within twenty-six acres of walled gardens sits Hotel Tiva, home to sixty-four rooms, a glass-roofed dining room and a candlelit salon for classic table games. Here, daylight guides the day and evenings unfold in their own unhurried way.
An estate welcome
Before this place became a hotel, a glasshouse stood here. More than a century ago, a family of plant collectors built its iron framework to protect palms, tree ferns and citrus in the cold season. The house came later, positioned to face it as though the garden wanted company. Hotel Tiva preserves this way of thinking: the garden leads, while the rooms, kitchen and salon are all placed for you to view it, enter it or catch its scent through an open window.
The estate now encompasses twenty-six acres of woodland paths, lawns and borders, alongside a walled kitchen garden providing most ingredients served by the Orangery. Breakfast is arranged beneath palms in the restored Great Glasshouse. Our nine gardeners work with the spa, kitchen and front desk, meaning the herbs in your evening cocktail and flowers beside your bed were often gathered that morning.
Small by intention, ours is a house of sixty-four rooms. We soon know your name, how you prefer your tea, and which salon table to hold quietly for those who favour cards over company.
Stay
At Hotel Tiva, each room has a view of greenery, from terrace-side rose beds and the lime avenue to the conservatory's arched glass. Estate-washed, line-dried linens are in every room, along with a modest display freshly gathered from that week's borders.
This light-filled 410 sq ft room has a king bed, window-side writing desk and glazed doors leading to a balcony overlooking the walled garden.
At 520 sq ft, it features a private glazed sunroom, soaking tub, and a little jungle of ferns and orchids cared for by our gardeners each morning.
Across 760 sq ft are a separate sitting room, deep bath beneath a skylight, and two balconies looking over the rose garden.
A Hotel Tiva year
Orchard grass fills with bulbs, violet comes to the wisteria walk, and the kitchen garden produces its earliest asparagus and peas for the Orangery's menu.
Sweet peas, peonies and roses fill the borders. The terrace welcomes dinner, the pool remains open later, and salon doors open onto the evening breeze.
Woodland-walk maples take on copper tones, apples are pressed in the former stable yard, and cedar, fig and rosemary warming oils arrive at the spa.
The estate's cosiest space is the Great Glasshouse. Glasshouse citrus ripens, every lounge has its fire lit, and afternoon tea easily carries on into evening.
Dining
Our principal dining room is the Orangery, an extended glass-lined hall with potted lemon trees. Breakfast, lunch and dinner draw on the walled garden and small farms a short drive from the gates. Because the menu changes weekly according to what can be picked, one night may bring chilled mint and pea soup, followed by beetroot tarte tatin with goat's curd the next.
Following dinner, guests make their way to the Potting Shed, an intimate brick bar stocked with jars of garden syrups and dried petals rather than seed trays. Drinks take their cue from the garden outside: rosemary for the negroni, rhubarb for the fizz, and elderflower in nearly everything from late spring onward.
The Garden Salon
Set in the former orchid house, our casino is a lofty space of arched windows and green velvet, opening from the conservatory. Rather than enormous, the Garden Salon feels close-knit, with eighteen tables, soft lamps, a weekend pianist, and dealers pleased to teach a game as readily as run it.
Before dinner, guests may come for blackjack; after, they can settle at roulette or move to the poker room when the house quietens. Adults only are admitted to the salon, and photo ID is checked at its door each evening.
Experiences
Hotel Tiva asks you to follow no timetable, though there is much to occupy a full day should you wish. Most offerings start in the garden and finish somewhere cosy.
Five treatment rooms, plus a steam room within the palm house, offer treatments using oils pressed from our own rose and lavender.
Within the flower garden's old brick walls is a heated pool, available from 7:00 to 21:00, with loungers placed amid lavender.
At 10:00 each morning, our head gardener conducts a tour. Across the week, flower pressing, terrarium-making and arranging workshops are also offered.
From the estate
We plant for guests who pause over a book and look up. It might be a rose-scented bench, a hedge opening that catches the glasshouse at sunset, or a path made slightly longer than necessary. Every detail is deliberate, intended for unhurried discovery.
Good to know
The salon welcomes hotel guests as well as visitors dining here that evening. All must be adults carrying photo ID, checked nightly at the door.
Yes. Families may enjoy the rooms, gardens, Orangery and pool, which has family hours between 9:00 and 12:00. Adults only may enter the Garden Salon and Potting Shed bar.
Dogs can stay in the Gardener's Cottages, all of which include a private walled garden. A bed, bowls, and hand-drawn guide to the finest woodland walks are provided.
Overnight guests park free in the former stable yard, only a brief walk to reception. Four electric-car charging points stand beside the gatehouse.
Dress is smart casual everywhere. After 18:00, we ask guests not to wear sportswear or swimwear in the salon and Orangery, though a jacket is not necessary.
Send us your dates and we will personally respond, usually that same day, with suitable rooms and a few suggestions for enjoying the season fully.
